本课程旨在让学员认识二十世纪以来历史学科的建立与发展及其所面对的挑战。课程内容包括了史学典范的建立与转移、史学书写方式与风格的变化、史学理论的多元趋向，以及科际整合的影响等课题，学员可以从而把握近现代历史学发展的脉络，并反思历史学科在当今社会中的功能与意义。本课程并有专题介绍二十世纪中外学界对於中国史研究的发展，学员可藉此进一步思考二十一世纪中国史学研究的动向。

学员根据本课程开列的阅读报告书单，选取一本书（或多於一本进行比较），配合课程内容的相关课题，撰成一篇约4000字的书评报告。

• 课堂参与10%

• 导修小组报告、评论及讨论表现30%

（每名学员均需准时出席导修，以小组形式进行一次专责报告，并缴交一份1500-2000字的书面报告。各小组并需要进行一次专责评论，其馀堂次可在旁听时参与讨论。）

书评报告书目

学员从以下书目选取一本专着（如进行比较，可选取多於一本），撰写约4000字的书评报告。

在书评报告中，可以说明以下内容：

• 所阅之书的主要论题、其所提出之问题，以及所採用的理论框架（如适用）
• 该书的主要内容、结构，及其特色
• 该书的研究视角和方法
• 该书所採用的史料及其处理方法有何特别之处
• 该书在学术研究上之贡献及其影响（例如：有否引起学界以至公众的讨论／争议；如有的话，应介绍讨论／争议的内容）
• 对於部分专着，更可考虑其作者之研究课题与其所身处的时代背景，以及学术潮流之关系。

学生递交作业时，必须连同已签署的声明一併提交，表示他们知道有关政策、规则、指引及程序。

• 如属小组习作，则所有组员均须签署声明；所有组员（不论有否签署声明及不论有否直接或间接撰写有问题的内容）均须负上集体责任及受到惩处。
• 如作业以电脑制作、内容以文字为主，并经由大学「维诚」系统 (VeriGuide) 提交者，学生将作业的电子档案上载到系统後，便会获得收据，收据上已列明有关声明。

未有夹附签署妥当的声明的作业，老师将不予批阅。

学生只须提交作业的最终版本。

学生将作业或作业的一部份用於超过一个用途（例如：同时符合两科的要求）而没有作出声明会被视为未有声明重覆使用作业。学生重覆使用其着作的措辞或某一、二句句子很常见，并可以接受，惟重覆使用全部内容则构成问题。在任何情况下，须先获得相关老师同意方可提交作业。
