CUHK held its Information Day for Undergraduate Admissions on 19 October 2024. The Department of History held an exhibition booth on the G/F of Esther Lee Building. Four academic counselling sessions and two chat room sessions were provided. The occasion offered a great opportunity for secondary students, teachers, and parents to understand more about CUHK and the Department, as well as to obtain the latest information on the Department’s BA programme such as admission criteria, curriculum, learning experience, and university life. The entire floor was filled with participants eagerly seeking information.
Prof. Judith HERRIN from the Department of Classics at King’s College London was invited by the Centre for Comparative and Public History to deliver a lecture entitled “The Centrality of Constantinople, Capital of a Medieval Empire” on 23 October 2024. The lecture explored the enduring significance of Constantinople as the fixed capital of the Byzantine Empire from the fourth century until its fall in 1453. Prof. HERRIN examined how the city’s strategic location and fortified infrastructure contributed to its role as a center of trade, culture, and imperial governance. Through an analysis of historical records and archaeological evidence, she highlighted the city’s ability to adapt and thrive through various challenges, including external threats and internal changes. The lecture emphasized Constantinople’s function as a hub of commerce, where diverse cultures converged, and its role in preserving Roman traditions while fostering a unique Byzantine identity. Prof. HERRIN concluded by reflecting on the city’s lasting legacy in world history, illustrating how its centrality and stability provided a foundation for Byzantine resilience and influence across Europe and Asia.
The Online Information Seminar for the M.A. Programme in Comparative and Public History was held on 26 October 2024. Prof. HE Xi, the Programme Director, introduced the features, study scheme and courses of our M.A. Programme with nearly 70 prospective students.
