Prof. HE Xi, Programme Director of the M.A. Programme in Comparative and Public History, shared the skills in drafting the title for a research paper, searching for historical materials and the methodology for writing a research paper to approximately 70 students in the Academic Writing Workshop on 17 October 2024. A tea reception was held after the workshop. Teachers and students had academic exchanges in a relaxed atmosphere.
Prof. Noah SHUSTERMAN held the “Workshop on Research Ethics” entitled “Ethical Citizen, Ethical Historian” on 18 October 2024. The workshop discussed various ethical issues and considerations for historians and graduate students. Prof. SHUSTERMAN started with his expectation of historians as upholding honesty and integrity in their works, including being open to and support each other as a whole academic community, sharing knowledge through formal publications and informal channels, dealing with archives honestly. He also cautions against altering historical facts to fit political narrative and reminds students of the dark side of academia. He gave specific recommendations to graduate students for how to interact with undergraduate students and the faculty and warned against the competition among graduate students by suggesting them not to belittle each other and to cooperate whenever possible. Overall, this workshop served as a guide for ethical behavior and responsibility of citizen historians.
