Recapping the World History Seminar “The King’s High Court: The Early Parliaments of Henry VIII, 1510–1523” on 8 October 2024

Prof. Jonathon MCGOVERN, from the College of Foreign Languages and Cultures of Xiamen University, was invited by the Centre for Comparative and Public History to deliver a lecture entitled “The King’s High Court: The Early Parliaments of Henry VIII, 1510-1523” on 8 October 2024. Prof. MCGOVERN explained some key facts about parliament in the early reign of Henty VIII, including its purpose, business and personnel. He pointed out that many of the basic features of the 16th century English parliament survive to this day. Although it was formally known as “the king’s high court”, parliament was really England’s supreme legislature, which was contrary to claims made by other historians.
