Recapping the Academic Seminar “Examining US Culture and History through Memorials and Monuments” on 18 March 2024

On 18 March, Mr. Colin CROSBY, Deputy Consul General from the U.S. Consulate in Hong Kong and Macau, was invited by the Department to deliver a lecture on “Examining US Culture and History through Memorials and Monuments”, to the students of HIST3701 History, Memory, and Monuments. The lecture was divided into three parts: an overview of the United States in general, examples of different types of memorials and monuments, and changes in memorials and monuments. During the Q&A session, he responded to students’ questions about American history education and monument conservation, and presented gifts. The lecture ended with applause.

Recapping the World History Seminar “The Servant of One Master: Controlling English Labour Mobility through Identity Documentation, c. 1550–1700” on 21 March 2024

Dr. Sonia TYCKO, from the School of History, Classics and Archaeology, The University of Edinburgh, was invited by the Centre for Comparative and Public History to deliver a lecture entitled “The Servant of One Master: Controlling English Labour Mobility through Identity Documentation, c. 1550–1700” on 21 March 2024. This talk focused on the system of servant testimonials in England from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries, which obliges servants to carry identity documents known as “testimonials” when finishing their term of employment with a master to seek job elsewhere. The speaker challenged the mainstream viewpoint of the historians who believe that the system of servant testimonials did not exist in practice. By searching the parish records, Dr. TYCKO found considerable registration documents for servant testimonials from different parishes in different counties from 1563 to 1731. In one case of a registration from Cuckfield, Sussex, the document records the name of the servant, the name of the former master, the length of service with the former master, and the fact that this servant was to be worked elsewhere. Although most of the servant testimonials themselves have not survived today, the speaker corroborated their common existence at the time through documents like the registration records.
