Academic Activities

Recapping the Academic Seminar “After Empire: The Japanese Right and its Relations with Asia” on 1 March 2024

Prof. Reto HOFMANN from Curtin University delivered a talk entitled “After Empire: The Japanese Right and its Relations with Asia” on 1 March 2024. The talk centered on the figure of the right-wing fixer, YATSUGI Kazuo. By scrutinizing his consequential role in furthering relations between Japan and South Korea, Prof. HOFMANN elucidated the mechanism through which Japanese right-wingers emerged as influential agents in promoting bilateral relations during the Cold War era. After the lecture, Prof. HOFMANN engaged with inquiries from attendees, addressing topics such as the conceptual demarcations between the “right-wing” and conservatism, the nexus between Pan-Asianism and the ideology of the prewar Japanese Right, and the United States’ involvement in the geopolitical dynamics of the Cold War era, etc.
