Recapping the World History Seminar “lanuensis ergo mercator: Who was a Merchant in Medieval Genoa?” on 8 February 2024

Prof. Joel PATTISON from the Department of History, Williams College, was invited by the Centre for Comparative and Public History to deliver a lecture entitled “lanuensis ergo mercator: Who was a Merchant in Medieval Genoa” on 8 February 2024. The Latin proverb lanuensis ergo mercator means “a Genoese, therefore a merchant”. Genoa, a city of Italy, was renowned for being a city of merchants during the later Middle Ages. Prof. PATTISON employed primary sources such as the notarial documents kept in the city archives to examine the role in trade played by investors of all social classes, ranging from artisans, sailors, to legal professionals and further reveal the diffuse social nature of overseas commerce, complexity of merchants’ social ties, network, and connections, and the meaning of being a merchant in late medieval Genoa and medieval Mediterranean.
