Recapping the World History Seminar ““The Global Age of Pearls”: Sixteenth- and Seventeenth-Century Pearl Fishing in the Americas and Asia” on 1 February 2024

Prof. Giorgio RIELLO from the Department of History, European University Institute, was invited by the Centre for Comparative and Public History to deliver a lecture entitled ““The Global Age of Pearls”: Sixteenth- and Seventeenth-Century Pearl Fishing in the Americas and Asia” on 1 February 2024. The talk delved into two cases of pearls fishing, pearl fishing off the coast of Venezuela in the early sixteenth century by Spanish and Dutch East India Company’s pearl fishing in the Gulf of Mannar in the seventeenth century. By comparing these two cases, the speaker gave two different scenarios of the usage of technology. Prof. RIELLO concluded that technology can be both a repository of processes and a tool of destruction.

Recapping the “Conference on Hong Kong in Archives” on 2 February 2024

On 2 February 2024, the Centre for Comparative and Public History successfully organised the “Conference on Hong Kong in Archives” in CUHK.
