Prof. Giorgio RIELLO from the Department of History, European University Institute, was invited by the Centre for Comparative and Public History to deliver a lecture entitled ““The Global Age of Pearls”: Sixteenth- and Seventeenth-Century Pearl Fishing in the Americas and Asia” on 1 February 2024. The talk delved into two cases of pearls fishing, pearl fishing off the coast of Venezuela in the early sixteenth century by Spanish and Dutch East India Company’s pearl fishing in the Gulf of Mannar in the seventeenth century. By comparing these two cases, the speaker gave two different scenarios of the usage of technology. Prof. RIELLO concluded that technology can be both a repository of processes and a tool of destruction.
On 2 February 2024, the Centre for Comparative and Public History successfully organised the “Conference on Hong Kong in Archives” in CUHK.
Prof. Elizabeth SINN, Honorary Professor of Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Hong Kong, Prof. TING Sun Pao, Adjunct Professor of Department of History, CUHK, were invited as keynote speakers to share their insights. Prof. CHEUNG Sui Wai, Chairman of Department of History, CUHK, served as the moderator.
The conference brought together historians to discuss the importance and significance of investigating archival records from different perspectives. Archival records serve as evidence of past events and play a pivotal role in historical research. The speakers also shared how to present past events into historical narratives by reconstructing fragmented archival materials. The event attracted almost 80 participants. The atmosphere was lively in which participants were actively asked questions.
