Recapping the World History Seminar “The Renaissance Papacy and its Illyrian Project, 1439–1474” Conducted by Prof. Luka ŠPOLJARIĆ on 25 October 2023

Prof. Luka ŠPOLJARIĆ from the Department of History, University of Zagreb, was invited by the Centre for Comparative and Public History to deliver a lecture entitled “The Renaissance Papacy and its Illyrian Project, 1439–1474” on 25 October 2023. To offer a comprehensive understanding of the Papacy’s role in the war against the Turks in the Balkan Shatter Zone, the talk began with an overview of the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires, tracing their rise and fall. It then discussed how Papal legates transformed the Illyrian lands from slavophone heretical territories into slavophone Catholic regions. The speaker elaborated on the Papacy’s Illyrian project, executed in three phases from 1439 to 1464, that aimed for a crusade uniting Christian nations under the Pope to conquer the Turks in Scythian Asia. During this era, the Papal activities in Bosnia and Croatia were enabled by the weakening of royal authority in Hungary. The talk also delved into the experiences of Croatian and Bosnian exiles in Rome and the reinvigoration of the Illyrian project between 1471 and 1474. In conclusion, the speaker recapitulated the core elements of the Illyrian Project, including the institutional Catholicization of the region, the active political roles played by legates and nuncios, and the Catholicization of the area’s heartland.
