Prof. Gregory AFINOGENOV from the Department of History, Georgetown University, was invited by the Centre for Comparative and Public History to deliver a lecture entitled “Spies and Scholars: Chinese Secrets and Imperial Russia’s Quest for World Power” on 4 October 2023. This talk started with posting three research questions regarding the nexus between knowledge and state power within the Sino-Russian context, the reasons behind the vastly forgotten archives of Russian intelligence on China, and the elements fueling the disciplinary formation of sinology in the setting of Russian imperial expansion. By scrutinizing the traditional models of knowledge and their associated networks, the speaker made a clear distinction between intelligence and traditional knowledge production. Further, he explored how Russo-Chinese dynamics interplayed in the broader global context, particularly against the backdrop of Russia’s longstanding imperial rivalry with Great Britain. Overall, the discussion underscored the importance of understanding the ways Russia generated and utilized varied knowledge forms to truly grasp its global power ambitions.
Prof. HE Xi, Programme Director of the M.A. Programme in Comparative and Public History, hosted the Academic Writing Workshop on 6 October 2023, which was attended by approximately 60 students. Prof. HE shared the skills of drafting research paper title, searching for historical materials, and using methodology for writing a research paper.
