Recapping the World History Seminar “Manga’s Global Century: Writing Media History Beyond the Archive” Conducted by Dr. Andrea HORBINSKI on 27 September 2023

Dr. Andrea HORBINSKI, who is an independent writer and historian, was invited by the Centre for Comparative and Public History to deliver a lecture entitled “Manga’s Global Century: Writing Media History Beyond the Archive” on 27 September 2023. During the talk, the speaker offered a comprehensive exposition on the origins of mass media in Japan in the late 19th century. Specifically, she highlighted the blend of Japanese and Euro-American artistic practices during the Meiji era and then moved onto the rise of manga and its precursors in the Taishō and Shōwa eras. She then drew parallels between the prewar children’s magazines from Kodansha and postwar manga, tracing the journey of manga development from Tagawa to Tezuka and beyond. Drawing upon the memoirs and interviews, she delved into the dynamic relationship between creators, publication staff, and audiences. Overall, with a critical examination of unconventional sources, she shed light on the tangible history of old media in Japan, encompassing newspapers, magazines, radio, film, and television.
