Recapping the World History Seminar “Scientific Remedies and Natural Specimens from the Islamic World in Seventeenth-century Europe” conducted by Dr. Federica GIGANTE on 16 March 2023

Dr. Federica GIGANTE from the History of Science Museum and Centre for the History of Science, Medicine, and Technology at University of Oxford, was invited by the Centre for Comparative and Public History to deliver a lecture entitled “Scientific Remedies and Natural Specimens from the Islamic World in Seventeenth-century Europe” on 16 March 2023. This talk aims to shed light on the intricate global network of individuals involved in the procurement and understanding of natural specimens and scientific remedies from the Islamic world to Europe during the seventeenth century. By utilizing primary sources such as artifacts from museums, treatises, and letters, the speaker conducted a detailed analysis of how scorpions and lizards were transported from Tunis to cities in Italy, with the objective of revealing the hidden network behind the circulation of these animal specimens. She then examined the channels of procurement and importation through which local and European merchants, who were engaged in trading natural specimens, were operating. Her investigation uncovered that Turkish remedies and drugs were also transported using the same methods. The talk concluded that these artifacts piqued the interest of the European scholarly community and underscored their significance as drivers of intellectual curiosity and advancement during that era.
