Academic Activities

Recapping the World History Seminar “Byzantine Alchemy and the History of Science” conducted by Prof. Alexandre M. ROBERTS on 2 March 2023

Prof. Alexandre M. ROBERTS from the Department of Classics, University of Southern California, was invited by the Centre for Comparative and Public History to deliver a lecture entitled “Byzantine Alchemy and the History of Science” on 2 March 2023. He thoroughly reviewed the concept of “alchemy” and comprehensively investigated the evolution of conventional narratives on the history of science, tracing their trajectory from Greece to the Arab and European world. He pointed out the near-complete exclusion of the Byzantine Empire from prevailing historiographical accounts. He then sought to remedy this neglect by drawing upon a diverse array of sources pertinent to Greek alchemy and undertaking a revision of these accounts. To gain a more nuanced understanding of the subject, he engaged in a close reading of Byzantine alchemical texts and subjects them to analytical scrutiny through the lenses of anthropologists and historians of science in the last century. Based on this investigation, Prof. ROBERTS concluded that these texts were robust evidence of a paradigm shift in Byzantine attitudes towards alchemy. Overall, Professor Roberts’ critical examination of these sources provides us with deep insights on the formation of historical narratives on the history of science in Eurasia from antiquity to the contemporary era.
