The seaside, which was regarded as a space of uncivilised wilderness in imperial China, gradually became sought-after sea-bathing sites over which different interest groups fought for control. Prof. POON’s lecture focused on the ways swimming and sea-bathing made the body and the seaside into contested sites of politics in 20th-century China.
Prof. LEE Seung Joon of the Department of History, National University of Singapore, was invited by the Department to present a lecture to faculty members and students.
Chinese urban workers played a significant role in the Chinese revolution. At the heart of Chinese labor politics was a demand for worker’s life improvement, particularly for adequate meal service. With a series of industrial welfare programs, the KMT Nationalists made unsparing efforts to garner the growing political potential of the labor force. Prof. LEE indicated that the workers’ canteen, which turned into the very institution that provided the workers with learning experience of nutritional knowledge, food entitlement, and political consciousness, which profoundly influenced the CCP’s eventual triumph when the KMT regime failed in the management of the overall food supply.
