On 5 January 2024, the Personal, Social and Humanities Education Section, Curriculum Development Institute of the Education Bureau and the Department of History of CUHK successfully hosted the “Conference on the Commemoration of the 90th Anniversary of the Long March (1934-2024)” in CUHK.
Dr. CHOI Yuk-lin, JP, the Secretary for Education, and Prof. POON Wai Yin Isabella, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) of CUHK were invited to officiate at the opening ceremony and deliver the opening speeches. Prof. QIU Jie, Emeritus Professor of Department of History, Sun Yat-sen University, was invited as a keynote speaker to share his insight and provide a deeper understanding of the “Long March” among scholars in mainland China.
The conference brought together historians and frontline teachers of Chinese history subjects to discuss the “Long March”. The lecture speakers delved into the history of the “Long March” from different schoalrly perspectives. The conference also introduced teaching resources of the “Long March”, including the memories of Red Army soldiers through oral history, and the pedagogy to design teaching materials. Dr. IP Sum Ming, the Chief Curriculum Development Officer (Personal, Social and Humanities Education) of the Education Bureau, and Prof. CHEUNG Sui Wai, Chairman of Department of History, presented concluding remarks for the conference.
The group photo-taking session for the graduates of 2022-23 M.A. Programme in Comparative and Public History was held at the Lady Shaw Building Rooftop Garden on 10 November 2023, with the presence of faculty members and graduates. Prof. PUK Wing Kin, Vice Chairman of the Department, and Prof. HE Xi, the M.A. Programme Director, were invited to present certificates to scholarship awardees as an encouragement for their pursuit of academic excellence.

Ms. LI Mei Sheung Michelle, JP, the Permanent Secretary for Education, and Prof. POON Wai Yin Isabella, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) of CUHK were invited to officiate at the opening ceremony and deliver the opening speeches. Prof. LEUNG Yuen Sang, Emeritus Professor of Department of History, and Prof. TING Sun Pao, Adjunct Professor of Department of History, were invited as keynote speakers to share their insights on Chinese history teaching and their journey of learning history.
The conference brought together historians, frontline teachers of Chinese history and history subjects to share their perspectives on the development of history teaching in secondary schools and strategies for learning enhancement and teaching effectiveness. Dr. IP Sum Ming, the Chief Curriculum Development Officer (Personal, Social and Humanities Education) of the Education Bureau, and Prof. CHEUNG Sui Wai, Chairman of Department of History presented the concluding remarks for the conference.
This programme aims to broaden the knowledge of gifted senior secondary students on the features and development of cities in the past and present, and equip them with the skills to study, understand and appreciate the factors that shape Hong Kong and other cities into the form we see. The programme is enlightening to students who wish to further their study and/ or pursue a career in relevant fields such as architecture, tourism, urban planning, etc. in future.
