講題大綱/概述
Lectures Outline / Synopsis: |
The effort of Chinese to develop ‘wealth and power’ in the late century is often looked upon as a failure because the dynasty did not survive and nearby Japan proved more successful at achieving respect from Western countries by the early twentieth century. Within this assessment, Chinese self-strengthening enterprises are viewed as flawed because officials meddled with enterprise management operations. This lecture seeks to evaluate these views by comparing Chinese efforts with efforts (and non-efforts) in other countries beyond Asia, including Islamic states and Latin America. With these comparisons made, the lecture will note the many ways in which official involvement in industries begun the self-strengthening era continued under the Kuomintang and in different ways under the Communists both before and after the reform era began. |
