Chinese historians understand by “institutional history”, essentially, government institutions. Since the writings of Max Weber, Western historians understand by “institutions” the application of set practices, along with their constructed realities, language and unintended consequences. There is a considerable gap between the two approaches. This conference series is designed to introduce the latter idea into the writing of Chinese history.

This conference focuses on the history of business institutions in China. By that, we refer to arrangements for the settlement of obligations such as money, especially paper money, accounting law, banks, and markets. Four areas will be highlighted: (i) money and banking; (ii) managerial methods; (iii) commercial law; (iv) technological transfer.
