Prof. Ian MORLEY and Prof. Hendrik TIEBEN (Director of the School of Architecture) co-convened the conference “20th Biennial Conference of the International Planning History Society (IPHS): The (High Density) Metropolis and Region in Planning History” on the campus of CUHK during the 2 – 5 July 2024.
The conference attracted delegates from more than 25 countries based in Asia, Europe, Oceania, and North and South America. Approximately 240 presentations were given in nearly 60 parallel sessions at the event. Panels dedicated to academic writing, and the obtaining of the first book contract were also given to postgraduate attendees. Fieldtrips in Hong Kong and Shenzhen helped show at first hand the form and expansion of high density urban environments in South China.
In discussing matters associated with urban cultures, governance, and urban design, the IPHS event provided new opportunity to explain port cities, ancient cities, cities and natural environments, new towns, regional development, colonialism and postcolonialism, housing, transport, public spaces, public health, and heritage.
The event proved highly successful, and reiterated the Department of History’s place at the heart of cutting-edge scholarly activity.
