Recapping the “International Symposium on the History of Huizhou” on 4-5 March 2026

The Centre for Chinese History, Department of History, CUHK; the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences; and the New Asia Institute of Advanced Chinese Studies co-organised the “International Symposium on the History of Huizhou” on 4-5 March 2026 in CUHK.  Prof. CHEUNG Sui Wai, Chairman of the Department of History, was invited to give an opening address on the symposium, highlighting the significance of the conference theme and its aim to transcend scholastic boundaries by re-examining regional diversity and interconnections under Ming-Qing institutions.

Across two days, scholars presented new findings on Huizhou’s social structures, lineage organisation, legal culture, religious practices, medical traditions, community associations, and newly discovered Huizhou manuscripts.  Lively discussions throughout the panels demonstrated the richness of Huizhou studies and their broader implications for understanding Chinese history.
