Abstract

Amid the long tradition of political literature in imperial China, the genre of monumental administrative histories spanning hundreds of chapters began to emerge from the eighth century onwards. Using a combination of computational distant reading and close textual analysis, this talk discusses developments in the epistemic frameworks of five major works from Tang through Yuan. The developments reveal how statecraft as a field of knowledge evolved in response to both shifting social contexts and the challenge of Daoxue moral politics.
