Call for Abstracts

The Department of History at The Chinese University of Hong Kong is pleased to invite submissions of abstracts to be presented at its 2nd Annual Graduate Student International Colloquium (AGSIC) on Chinese Historical Scholarship, scheduled to be held on August 13-14, 2026.

Starting in 2025, the AGSIC has provided a new forum for early-career researchers to showcase their projects and share innovative research ideas and agendas. Participants will also meet others in their research area and forge new professional relationships. Having successfully hosted the AGSIC on Southeast Asian History Scholarship in May 2026, the Department of History is eager to invite young scholars in the fields of Chinese History, either graduate students (including MA, MPhil and PhD) or recently graduated researchers, to present their research to their peers and seniors in relevant fields.

This year’s theme is “Encounters and Entanglements”. Moving beyond conventional boundaries in the study of Chinese History, we invite participants to explore the diverse encounters and entanglements that emerged at the margins, boundaries, and frontiers of historical China, whether through the movement of people, cultures, materials, or ideas across geographical, political, and ideological spaces. We also welcome cross-cultural topics like Chinese-Western interactions and peripheral Chinese outside the Sinosphere. Contributions employing local, national and regional research, as well as transnational and interdisciplinary studies, are all encouraged.

The Colloquium will be held in person on August 13-14, 2026, in Room 220, Fung King Hey Building (KHB 220), The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

This application requires basic contact and background information and a 150-to-250-word abstract in Chinese or English. The submission deadline is July 15, 2026, by 11:59 pm (Hong Kong Time). All proposed abstracts will be subject to blind peer review, and applicants will be notified of the results in late July 2026.

The AGSIC Organizing Committee regrets that it cannot provide travel stipends or other funding sources for participants.

Eligibility and Application Guidelines:

1. Applicants must be currently enrolled in, or have recently graduated from, a program of graduate study.
2. Papers must be related to Chinese History and should be presented in Chinese (Putonghua or Cantonese) or English.
3. Abstracts must be no longer than 250 words.
4. Authors of accepted abstracts should attend the colloquium and present in person.
