Recapping the “Workshops for the Final-Year RPg Students 2018-19” held on 9 November 2018

The Division of History organised the “Workshops for the Final-Year RPg Students”, offering an interactive sharing and exchange platform for the Department’s research postgraduate students to exchange and discuss their research findings. Prof. POO Mu-chou, Division Head, gave opening remarks to the Department’s research postgraduate students.

Recapping the Academic Seminar “The Second Generation of the Chinese Maritime Customs’ History Studies: New Sources and New Methodology on Modern Chinese History” conducted by Prof. Takeshi HAMASHITA on 9 November 2018
Prof. Takeshi HAMASHITA of the Department of History, Sun Yat-sen University, was invited by the Department to present a lecture to the Department’s postgraduate students.

In the lecture, Prof. HAMASHITA introduced historical materials related to the Chinese Maritime Customs and shared with the students how these historical materials could be used for research. He pointed out that changes in the natural environment and the development of globalisation have prompted historians to update their awareness of problems. In recent years, a growing wealth of maritime customs historical materials, such as the personal diaries of customs officers, hydrological and climatic data of various places, were compiled and published. These materials provided the possibility of developing new research approaches. In the past, research on maritime customs history often started from the perspective of economic history. Prof. HAMASHITA encouraged students who were interested in using maritime customs materials to expand their research on maritime customs history to other areas such as nature, social life and culture.
