Important Matters for Research Postgraduate Students


Academic Matters

1.

For All Students

 

  • All students are required to take a (HIST8001) Thesis Guidance course in each term until their theses are finally submitted.

  • All students are required to complete 9 units of coursework in addition to the required courses. Subject to supervisor・s approval, student may choose to take no more than 3 units of HIST4000-level course. For students taking a course in the undergraduate curriculum, assignments for them are usually more research-oriented than that for undergraduates and are designed and given by the teachers concerned.

  • All students are required to complete Progress Report (Milestones) with approval by their supervisor(s) and the Division Head in September/October and May/June of each academic year.

  • A student who obtains a cumulative grade point average (GPA) below 2.0 in the preceding term or receives a failure grade in HIST8001 will be put on academic probation. A student cannot submit a thesis while on academic probation.

  • CUHK Research Postgraduate Student Grants for Overseas Academic Activities are available for full-time regular postgraduate research students to conduct field research or to present paper(s) at regional or international conferences. Application should be made through the Division to the Graduate School.

  • Students who admitted in 2011-12 and before have to pass the IT Proficiency Test administered by the University. Students are advised to inquire about the Test as early as possible. Please visit www.sitc.cuhk.edu.hk for details.

  • All students are required to complete the IPL course on :Observing Intellectual Property and Copyright Law during Research;. Please visit www.cuhk.edu.hk/clear for details.

  • Termination of studentship and study is regulated by guidelines of the Graduate School. Please visit the Graduate School・s Homepage for details.

   

2.

For New Students (admitted in 2012-13 and thereafter)

 

  • Supervision: Supervisor is assigned upon admission. For Ph.D. students, choosing fields and forming an advisory committee are required. Please return the <>Formation of Advisory Committee Form and the Tentative Thesis Title Record Form to Division Office by 30 November.

  • Required course: All new students are required to complete HIST6010/7010 Graduate Seminar on Historiography, a course taught by the faculty members of History Department and/or visiting scholars.

  • Another required course: Ph.D. students are required to complete HIST7101 Independent Studies preferably offered by supervisor in Year 1.

  • For students admitted in 2012-13 and thereafter, IT Proficiency Test is NOT required.

   

3.

For Ph.D. Students Only

 

  • Fields of Study: Ph.D. students should choose a major field, 1st supporting field and 2nd supporting field from the fields of specialization of the programme. An advisory committee, which is composed of the supervisor(s) from the major field, one teacher from the 1st supporting field and one from the 2nd supporting field, will then be formed to supervise the student.

  • Students are advised to study the Study Scheme and the curriculum carefully and to make decision on their fields of specialization as early as they can. Please refer to the online Handbook at the Graduate School・s Homepage.

  • Qualifying Examination: Students are required to take a Qualifying Examination on field knowledge and thesis proposal before advancing to Ph.D. candidacy.

  • Students admitted in 2010-11 and thereafter are required to pass the Qualifying Examination within the maximum period appended below, on condition that such period should be not less than one year from the admission date and at least six months before the normative study end date.

    • With research Master・s degree:

      • Full time: 24 months

      • Part time: 32 months

    • Without research Master・s degree:

      • Full time: 36 months

      • Part time: 48 months

  • Students should fulfill the Third Language Requirement as prescribed in the Study Scheme.

  • Students are required to present at least one paper at a local workshop or international conference before completion of programme.

- Leave year equivalent to University academic year. Those who commence studies after the start of academic year is given leave on a pro-rata basis

Conference Leave Graduate School

- Applicable to those who wish to attend conference overseas funded by Mainland Research Grant or Grant for Overseas Academic Activities etc.

- Total :Paid; conference leave is up to a maximum of 20% of the normative study period

- Maximum period allowed is up to 3 days plus the conference period for each application

- Supporting documents must be attached

In-residence Leave Graduate School

- Applicable to those who wish to collect data for research, conduct research overseas funded by Mainland Research Grant or Grant for Overseas Academic Activities etc.

- Total :Paid; in-residence leave is up to a maximum of 20% of the normative study period

- Supporting documents must be attached

Leave with PGS Suspended Graduate School

- Leave of absence is limited to a maximum of one year in the first instance, and any extension is limited to one more year, beyond which no further extension will be granted, unless approval from the Graduate Council is obtained in special cases.

Note:

  1. In case of illness necessitating absence exceeding three weeks, a student should submit an application for sick leave together with a certificate signed or countersigned by the Director of the University Health Service for approval of the Dean of the Graduate School.

  2. A student who has been absent without leave or who is in breach of the residence requirements for a continuous period exceeding one month will be considered as having withdrawn from studies.
